How does medical weight-loss treatment work in Sweden?

Medical weight-loss treatment is treatment for overweight or obesity that is guided by a doctor rather than done alone. It combines support for everyday habits with medical follow-up and, when medically appropriate, prescription medicines. In Sweden the medical assessment and any prescription are made by a legitimerad läkare (a licensed physician), and medicines are collected at an apotek (a Swedish pharmacy).

Can I get private medical weight-loss treatment online in Sweden? Often, yes. An assessment can often begin with a video consultation with a licensed physician. The physician decides whether the available information is sufficient or whether medical records, tests or an in-person examination are needed before a final medical decision can be made.

How the Viktbehandling process works

1. Request an assessment. You share your contact details and the option you’re interested in. There are no health questions at this step, it is not a medical decision, and it involves no payment.
2. Choose a programme. If you can proceed, you select a programme and approve the terms.
3. Video consultation. The medical assessment usually begins with a video consultation with a licensed physician, who decides whether additional records, tests or an in-person examination are needed before making the final medical decision.
4. Programme and follow-up. If treatment is appropriate, you receive personalised support and scheduled follow-up according to your programme.

What does the doctor assess before considering treatment?

The physician makes an individual assessment. This typically considers your general health and medical history, current medicines, previous weight-loss attempts, and relevant risk factors. A prescription is only issued when the physician judges that medication is medically appropriate and safe — it is never automatic.

What is included in a medical weight-loss programme?

Both monthly programmes include an initial video assessment with a licensed physician, individually adapted food, protein and activity support, medical follow-up according to clinical assessment, and short, non-urgent contact according to the approved support process. The number of planned follow-ups and plan updates depends on the programme length.

How much does medical weight-loss treatment cost in Sweden?

Programmes start from 449 kr per month. Below are the two programmes and a separate one-time physician assessment. The medicine is a separate cost, described further down.

Personal food, protein and activity support

The programme includes individually adapted food, protein and activity support. In practice this support can consider your daily routine, food preferences, appetite changes, practical meal structure, protein intake, current activity level, any physical limitations, home or gym access, and preserving muscle mass during weight loss.

How does follow-up work?

Follow-up is planned and part of the programme, not an add-on. The six-month programme includes five planned digital follow-ups and up to three substantial plan updates; the three-month programme includes two planned follow-ups and one substantial plan update. Medical follow-up is carried out according to clinical assessment.

What costs may be added separately?

The following are not included in the monthly programme fee and are paid separately unless expressly stated otherwise:

• Prescription medicines (bought at a Swedish pharmacy)
• Any blood tests or laboratory work
• Extra booked physician appointments beyond the included follow-ups
• External examinations or specialist visits

Is weight-loss medication included in the monthly fee?

No. Medication is never included in the programme fee. A prescription (recept) is only issued if a licensed physician judges it medically appropriate and safe, and a prescription is never guaranteed. Prescription medicines are bought and paid for separately at a Swedish pharmacy (apotek). Whether a prescription medicine is covered by the Swedish high-cost protection system (högkostnadsskydd) depends on the medicine, its approved use and the current reimbursement decision; medication used for weight management is often paid for fully by the patient. Current information should be checked through TLV, 1177 and the relevant official product information. Viktbehandling does not sell medicines and takes no margin on the medicine price.

What happens if medication is not medically suitable? If the physician decides that medication is not appropriate, no prescription is issued. A plan without medication may instead be recommended, or you may be referred onward. The medical decision always rests with the physician.

What happens after the binding period, and how do I cancel?

The three-month and six-month programmes have a fixed binding period and are paid monthly. After the binding period, the programme continues monthly at the same price until cancelled, with one month’s notice. Do I have a 14-day right of withdrawal?

A statutory 14-day right of withdrawal (ångerrätt) generally applies when you buy a service at a distance in Sweden, according to the applicable terms you approve before purchase.

Who is responsible for the medical assessment?

The medical assessment is performed by a licensed physician working with an independent Swedish healthcare provider (vårdgivare).
