How does medical weight-loss treatment work in Sweden?

Medical weight-loss treatment is treatment for overweight or obesity that is guided by a doctor rather than done alone. It combines support for everyday habits with medical follow-up and, when medically appropriate, prescription medicines. In Sweden the medical assessment and any prescription are made by a legitimerad läkare (a licensed physician), and medicines are collected at an apotek (a Swedish pharmacy).

Can I get private medical weight-loss treatment online in Sweden? Yes. The request, the first physician appointment (by video, with Swedish BankID in the call) and later follow-up can all be handled digitally. If you prefer, the first appointment can take place in person in Gothenburg instead. The physician makes an individual medical assessment and decides whether medical records, tests or further examination are needed before a final medical decision can be made.

How the Viktbehandling process works

1. Take the free preliminary check. A few minutes online; it shows whether a doctor’s appointment is likely to be appropriate. If it shows that treatment is unlikely to be appropriate, we recommend that you do not book.
2. Send a booking request. You share your contact details and a preferred time. There are no health questions at this step and no payment in the form.
3. Pay the first month. We confirm your time by email and send you a link to pay the first month by card before the appointment. Nothing is paid in the booking form.
4. Medical assessment. At the first appointment, by video or in person in Gothenburg, a licensed physician makes the medical assessment and decides whether additional records or tests are needed before making the final medical decision.
5. Plan and follow-up. If treatment is appropriate, you receive an individual treatment plan and follow-up according to it, digital when medically appropriate.

What does the doctor assess before considering treatment?

The physician makes an individual assessment. This typically considers your general health and medical history, current medicines, previous weight-loss attempts, and relevant risk factors. A prescription is only issued when the physician judges that medication is medically appropriate and safe — it is never automatic.

How much does medical weight-loss treatment cost in Sweden?

Here the programme costs SEK 450 per month. Minimum 4 months (SEK 1,800 in total), then cancel whenever you like. Counted over a year that is SEK 5,400 in programme fees. You pay the first month by card before the doctor's appointment. The card is saved and the monthly fee is then charged automatically once a month. The medicine is a separate cost, paid at a Swedish pharmacy and described further down.

The first appointment is by video. You identify yourself with Swedish BankID in the video call.

How does follow-up work?

Follow-up is part of the monthly fee, not an add-on. It follows your individual treatment plan, and it can be digital when medically appropriate. Prescription renewal is included, as the physician judges appropriate.

Your patient pages

When you have paid the first month, we email you a link to set a password for your patient pages. There you can:

• Log your weight and follow your weight chart
• See your dose schedule and add injection-day reminders to your calendar
• Write to the clinic
• See your payments, change your card and end the programme

What costs may be added separately?

The following are not included in the programme fee and are paid separately unless expressly stated otherwise:

• Prescription medicines (bought at a Swedish pharmacy)
• Any blood tests or laboratory work, and DXA scans
• A dietitian
• Extra booked physician appointments beyond the follow-up in your treatment plan
• External examinations or specialist visits

Is weight-loss medication included in the programme fee?

No. Medication is never included in the programme fee. A prescription (recept) is only issued if a licensed physician judges it medically appropriate and safe, and a prescription is never guaranteed. Prescription medicines are bought and paid for separately at a Swedish pharmacy (apotek). Whether a prescription medicine is covered by the Swedish high-cost protection system (högkostnadsskydd) depends on the medicine, its approved use and the current reimbursement decision; medication used for weight management is often paid for fully by the patient. Current information should be checked through TLV, 1177 and the relevant official product information. Viktbehandling does not sell medicines and takes no margin on the medicine price.

What happens if medication is not medically suitable? If the physician decides that medication is not appropriate, no prescription is issued. A plan without medication may instead be recommended, or you may be referred onward. The medical decision always rests with the physician. If you have answered truthfully but the doctor judges for medical reasons that the treatment is not right for you, you pay only the first month (SEK 450, or SEK 1,450 with an in-person visit). Nothing more is charged and the programme ends. If a later month has already been charged, it is refunded.

Is there a minimum period, and how do I cancel?

Yes. Minimum 4 months (SEK 1,800 in total), then cancel whenever you like. If you cancel earlier, the remainder up to SEK 1,800 (SEK 2,800 with an in-person first visit) is charged to your saved card. You keep the programme until the end of the fourth month. After 4 months you can cancel whenever you like, with no notice period. A month you have already paid for runs to its end, and nothing more is charged. Further details are in the terms.

Do I have a 14-day right of withdrawal?

You have a 14-day right of withdrawal under our terms. You use it under Payment in your patient pages or by replying to the receipt email. The minimum period never applies to a withdrawal.

Who is responsible for the medical assessment?

The medical assessment is performed by Dr Masoud Sorkhabi, överläkare (senior consultant), at the first appointment. Medical responsibility for the assessment, any prescription and the treatment rests with the licensed physician.
