Approved indication in Sweden
Wegovy (semaglutide) is approved by EMA and the Swedish Medical Products Agency for:
- Long-term weight management in adults, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.
- Long-term weight management in adolescents aged 12–17 with obesity and a body weight above 60 kg, following specialist assessment.
Unlike Mounjaro, Wegovy is not approved for type 2 diabetes. For diabetes, the semaglutide product used is Ozempic, which contains the same active substance but is a separate product with its own doses and reimbursement rules. Read more in Ozempic vs Wegovy.
BMI criteria for the weight-management indication
The official criteria for weight management are:
- BMI ≥30 kg/m² (obesity), without a requirement for an associated condition.
- BMI ≥27 kg/m² (overweight), combined with at least one weight-related health condition.
Weight-related conditions that may support treatment at BMI 27–30
- Type 2 diabetes or prediabetes
- Hypertension (high blood pressure)
- Dyslipidaemia (abnormal blood lipids)
- Obstructive sleep apnoea
- Cardiovascular disease
- Metabolic syndrome
- Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD)
What doctors consider beyond BMI
Doctors always make an overall assessment that also considers:
- Medical history: previous illnesses, operations and medication
- Previous weight-loss attempts: nutrition, exercise, other medicines and surgery
- Mental health: eating disorders, depression and anxiety
- Motivation and expectations: realistic goals and readiness for long-term treatment
- Ability to combine treatment with nutrition and physical activity
Contraindications and important warnings
The EU product information lists allergy to semaglutide or its other ingredients as a contraindication. The doctor also needs to discuss pregnancy, breastfeeding and other risk factors.
- Allergy to the active substance or other ingredients.
- Pregnancy: treatment should not be used during pregnancy.
- Breastfeeding: always discuss this with a doctor before treatment.
- MTC or MEN 2: these are risk flags in our preliminary check, but are not listed as contraindications in the EU product information.
The preliminary check does not replace the doctor's individual assessment.
Precautions and individual assessment
Treatment requires particular assessment in people with:
- Previous pancreatitis or ongoing gastrointestinal disease
- Gallbladder disease or gallstones
- Severely impaired kidney or liver function
- Active or untreated diabetic retinopathy (with type 2 diabetes)
- A history of an eating disorder
- Use of insulin or sulphonylureas (risk of hypoglycaemia)
Age limits
Wegovy is approved for adults aged 18 and over and, following an extended indication in 2023, for adolescents aged 12–17 with obesity and a body weight above 60 kg. Use in adolescents requires specialist assessment and a separate follow-up structure. In older adults (≥65), treatment may be appropriate but requires individual assessment of kidney function and associated conditions.
Pregnancy and fertility
Semaglutide is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Women who could become pregnant should use effective contraception during treatment. Discuss contraception, other medicines and any plans for pregnancy with a doctor.
What does Vikt's assessment involve?
When you send a preliminary request:
- You provide your contact details and preferred option. The booking form does not collect health information.
- We review your request and normally respond within one business day.
- We confirm a time for your first doctor's appointment, by video or in person in Gothenburg, and send you a link to pay the first month. The doctor carries out the medical assessment at the appointment.
- A licensed doctor always makes the final assessment and issues any prescription.
Try our preliminary assessment (Swedish) — it provides guidance, not a diagnosis, and does not replace a medical assessment. If you wish to proceed, you can send a free booking request.
What if the indication is not met?
If your BMI or health profile does not meet the approved criteria, medical GLP-1 treatment is normally not appropriate. Other options that may be discussed include:
- Lifestyle-based weight management and nutrition guidance
- Structured exercise and behavioural support
- Follow-up of underlying conditions where appropriate (e.g. insulin resistance or PCOS)
- Reassessment if your health changes
